Building Type: Observation Tower
Critic: Matthew Lopez
The following buildings are examples of observatory decks that are both otherworldly and transformative. Their alien-like appearance allows them to stand out in their sites, with the overall goal of adapting and transforming the natural environment around them. The building is constructed out of malleable materials that seem to shimmer and shift, almost as if it is alive. Its shape is constantly changing curves and angles that defy traditional architectural forms.
Moreover, for both examples, the observatory deck of the building is perched either atop the structure or enveloped within the building’s skin. The deck has a range of interactive features that allow visitors to learn more about the local flora and fauna, as well as the stars and planets in the sky. The deck’s futuristic technology creates an immersive experience that leaves visitors feeling like they have been transported to another world.
