CRITICAL CARTOGRAPHIES

This course, guided by Professor Jillian Crandall, aimed to elucidate the concept of critical cartography, emphasizing the powerful synergy between mapping techniques and rigorous research methodologies. In addition to cultivating an understanding of critical cartography, the course offered practical instruction in map-making software, most notably QGIS, and underscored the significance of map legibility. Myself and my collogues taking this course were equipped with the skills to access open data sources, a crucial aspect of modern cartographic endeavors. A highlight of the course was the culminating project, where I developed an atlas "The Flux of People and Places: A Migratory Atlas of the Hudson Valley and New York City." Through this project, I gained what I found to be immensely valuable insights into the intricate interplay of economic and social factors that underpin the movement of populations between these two regions.
