Building Type: Affordable Housing

Location: Troy, NY

Project Hearthstone is a community-centered architectural project located in Downtown Troy, NY that seeks to address local issues such as high unemployment rates, lack of childcare, and community bonding. The project transforms St. Mary’s Church into a community center that includes a career center, daycare, and temporary housing. The main floor serves as a meeting space for locals to bond and attend public workshops and job training events. The daycare is located on the first floor, while the addition provides young families with 1-4 bedroom apartments for temporary housing.

The addition integrates seamlessly into the church’s structure, utilizing features such as the stained glass windows for the temporary housing floors and the stepped altar for the daycare. This integration helps to emphasize the original architecture and promotes a sense of community for locals attending events and bonding activities on the main floor.
