OFFWORLD PROJECTOR
Summer 2022 | Vertical Studio
Building Type: International Spaceport
Location: New York, NY
Critic: Caleb White

The design technique of our project was the use of rotation to create 3D space and ultimately de-tail. The paneling was created by finding curves in the collage, dividing space, and then rotating those planes. The rotation is also prevalent within the planning of space in our project. A central point was chosen on each of the floors with guide lines rotated off of it to help create the walls and other design features. Our private program includes an exclusive lounge, cafe, pier, and the arrival and departure sequence for Spaceport passengers; majority of which can be found in the lower level. While our public program consisting of cafes, a viewing deck, a pier, and exhibition spaces are featured on the upper floors.
The most prominent exhibition space in our building, the Offworld Projector, acts as a lantern and showcases picturesque visuals of life on Mars and other interplanetary colonies. The illustrative nature of our proposal will not only contribute to the successes of human spaceflight, but it will normalize ideas and opinions of space as an accessible and habitable environment.
